About Aunty Em's

Aunty Em's is the result of a number of brainstorms between Van Can Cook and Aunty Em herself, sisters who live and work in the Upper Highway region of KwaZulu Natal.

Our whole family has allergies and health - ahem - issues. A brother with Cystic Fibrosis, parents and sisters who are CF carriers. A daughter and a husband who are CF carriers, too. We have dairy allergies, lactose intolerances, gluten intolerance and wheat allergies. We can’t have any peanuts and not too many regular nuts, either. Finding food we can eat is a chore by itself. Making it delicious? Hmm … hard to do.

Because there’s so little we can actually eat, we’ve started taking wonderful supplements, which have made a big difference. We can concentrate better now, and have more energy. We hardly ever get sick any more, and when we do, we’re better in just a few days. It’s wonderful, and we think we’re starting to get an idea of what “normal” feels like.

The thing is, we’re a long way from feeling normal. Head aches, tummy cramps, constipation, diarrhoea, thrush, exhaustion, acne, nightmares, hormonal imbalances, mood swings, hay fever, anxiety and growing pains are just some of the things we try to overcome every day. The concentration has been helped a lot by our Omega 3 supplements, and if you’re not taking them yet, start now! But it seems like some of us just can’t pay attention to anything.

We have been gluten- and dairy-free for about ten years, and it’s frustrating that we have never felt 100% in all that time – better, yes. But not great. Recently we discovered the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and the joy of Epsom Salts, and this has triggered a deeper journey than ever before into making food that is organic, natural, whole, healthy and safe.

Aunty Em’s (named after the Super-Chef sister), is our blog for recording our journey into complete health. We hope you’ll join us for the ride.
